Professor of Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology

Brief Profile

Hello! I'm Dixon Olutade Torimiro (PhD), a Professor of Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology in the Faculty of Agriculture, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. I also had both teaching and research experience in Botswana as a Professor of Agricultural Extension. My major research activities have been focusing on children/ youth studies in rural communities and extension vis-à-vis their socio-cultural and economics milieu, rural community development issues, participation/involvement in agricultural activities, push and pull factors from farming, farm needs, entrepreneurship among others. My research interest was inspired by the need for continuity and sustainability of agriculture as a noble traditional occupation, which is of major economic and cultural importance in Nigeria. I championed research in challenging the existing theories and models in conceptualising farm families’ research and farm practices with a view to assessing and offering explanation to children’s and youth’s contributions to farming.

My inaugural lecture entitled “who will bring farm children back to the farm” published by the Obafemi Awolowo University Press captured the theory, model and practice of my concerns for future and sustainability of farming in Nigeria. I am currently developing research interest in farm succession planning and farm youth involvement in farm resources management.

I was a Nigeria’s Federal Government Scholar in 1991; Laureate, Council for Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA)’s Child and Youth Studies Institute, Dakar, Senegal in 2002; Member, College of Research Associates, United Nations University’s Institute of Natural Resources in Africa (UNU/INRA), Accra in 2002; and Grantee of CODESRIA’s Multinational Working Group (MWG) in 2004, Association of African Universities (AAU) Accra, Ghana in 2010, Co-investigator, International Development Research Council, Canada in 2012 and 2015, and Economic and Social Research Council, UK in 2017. I was a Visiting Scientist to Cape Breton University, Canada in 2013; Visiting Professor to Botswana College of Agriculture, University of Botswana, Gaborone (2013-2015); and Northwest University, Mafikeng Campus, South Africa in 2016. I co-initiated the International Research and Development Network of Children and Youth in Agriculture Programme (CYIAP- Network) in 1997, and founded the African Centre for Rural Youth Empowerment (ACRYE) in Nigeria in 2004; I am the current Chairman, Board of trustees of the CYIAP- Network and ACRYE in Nigeria. I have trained and mentored a good number of doctoral candidates, participated in assessing professorial candidates and served as external examiner to some universities within and outside Nigeria. I have published a good number of academic articles in the field of agricultural extension and rural sociology.
